In this class students will learn basic tribal style technique and posture, fluid arm movement, popping, locking, tick tocking, floorwork and serpent-like body movements. This class will also include fun combos and playful choreography. Each class will begin with an intense body conditioning warm up and drills to improve muscle control, flexibility and isolation so be prepared to feel the burn. Attire: Comfortable dance pants. No skirts please. The instructor needs to see how you are moving to make sure it is the correct way. Hip scarves are optional. Ballet slippers, socks or bare feet is ok. No street shoes please. This class is an ongoing drill of the basics, with a choreography embedded, great for beginners, for experienced dancers who want to drill, who are just starting with me, or who want to pick up a choreography. For 15 minutes after the regular one hour class, we'll work on a special topic, probably veil or sword . There are plenty of veils and hip scarves here to borrow or purchase, or bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing, yoga pants are perfect. I do want to be able to see your posture. $48 for 4 weeks. Poi Workshop with Eva Nadira Date: Saturday, July 10 Time:10am-12pm Cost: $40/person Location: Swingtime Ballroom www.swingtimeballroom.com Description: Learn the basics of poi from twirls to spins to untangling a hot veil mess! Eva has been spinning poi for 6 years, and soon after started adding larger and larger attachments to them, culminating in the use of full silk veils. There will be a few basic poi sets available for sale. Bring your own veils. You can use rectangular or semicircular silk or semicircular tissue lame. If you're on the short side ("fun size"), please use semicircular veils. Colors are up to you, but having 2 veils of different colors will be helpful. If there is time, Eva will also go over putting together a routine for performance. Sidqi has taught at several east coast Balkan camps, the Folktours Mideast camp, Rakassah East, and last year he taught at the Mendocino Middle East Camp in CA. He has been head of percussion at Sahara Dance for years ( but taking this summer off to do drum circles) He has made several trips to Istanbul, Turkey, in search of Romani (Gypsy) teachers. In addition, he has had great workshops in his home, with Suhail Kaspar and Issam Houshan of the Bellydance Superstars. He is also founder of WMFC, which was the first organization to bring Rehan Tuscuz from Istanbul to DC, to teach Turkish Romani dance.
