Education:
Ph.D. Physical Chemistry, The Johns Hopkins University, November, 1992. Thesis: Electron impact ionization-excitation of molecular Nitrogen.
B.A. Chemistry, Earlham College, with Honors, June, 1984.
Experience:
1997-present:
Goembel Instruments. Founded a business that specializes in the design and development of high energy resolution electron spectrometers for flight. Invented a vastly improved charged particle spectrometer (U.S. Patent number 6,703,612) that is ideal for use in space. Currently funded by NASA SBIR Phase II research and development project "Spacecraft Charge Monitor" (Contract NAS10-02038). Recently completed Phase I of the SBIR project under contract to NASA, Kennedy Space Center, contract number NAS10-01069. Analyzed data from the Atmospheric Explorer-E satellite as Principal Investigator for NASA SR&T Grant NAGW-4660 "Coupling Between the Sun and Terrestrial Thermospheric Neutral Winds". Hired consultant to IDEA, Inc. for NASA SBIR Contract #NAS5-97972 "The Origin and Significance of Electrical Stratospheric Phenomena".
1994-1997:
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, Space Department, Science and Analysis Branch. Analyzed Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite far ultraviolet scanning spectrometer data. Calibrated the SSUSI ultraviolet imaging spectrometer for flight on a DMSP satellite. Analyzed data from the Atmospheric Explorer-E satellite for a NASA Supporting Research and Technology grant (Principal Investigator and Program Manager at JHU/APL).
1993-1994:
National Research Council Research Associate at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Laboratory for Extraterrestrial Physics. Analyzed satellite (thermospheric neutral wind) data for evidence of the Sun-Earth Connection. Developed a technique to analyze satellite (electron spectrometer) data in a novel way in order to study thermospheric dynamics. Science Team member for the NASA Goddard Laboratory for Atmospheres Shuttle Ozone Limb Sounding Experiment. Recieved Service Award from NASA's Laboratory for Extraterrestrial Physics, Oct. 28,1994.
1993:
Postdoctoral Fellow, The Johns Hopkins University. Designed and built an improved high resolution coincident electron impact spectrometer for the laboratory measurement of electron impact ionization-excitation branching ratios.
1987-1992:
Ph.D. Candidate, The Johns Hopkins University. Developed a high resolution coincident electron impact spectrometer for the laboratory measurement of branching ratios (electron impact ionization-excitation of N2). Determined the electron impact ionization-excitation branching ratios of N2.
Patent:
Large geometric factor charged particle spectrometer. U.S. Patent number 6,703,612 issued 3/9/04.
