Belly News
May Belly News (4/17/09)
Dearest Dancers,
(if you are getting this in error, let me know. If you already got this, let me know? And if you just feel like letting me know you got this, I's appreciate it- still working out kinks. I did NOT get it from myself last time, but I know at least one person did.)
I am attempting something new, which is to send out a newsletter from the wonderful www.marylandbellydance.com site. I don't know what it will look like, but if successful I will send it out again, maybe in a month.... any feedback is appreciated!
I am excited about many upcoming events:
You can join www.marylandbellydance.com for free and get your own page.
You can also join www.meetup.com/Baltimore-DC-Bellydance/ for free!
Both sites offer a calendar of bellydance events in the area.
I am teaching a series of veil choreography workshops that will be performed by anyone who learns it at Artscape, July 17th! What fun, I hope you'll join us!

Nina Amaya’s October Bellynews
I have been sending out this newsletter monthly for over 2 years now, although some of you are getting it for the first time. The address list has grown to hundreds and I have gotten a lot of ‘thanks for the news’ emails and a few ‘take me off’s (usually when people move). I’m not sure I can continue; running the monthly hafla, classes I teach, performances and a troupe- and I need to TAKE classes, of course. So, this might be the last one. Or maybe someone wants to help, if this is a resource people really want. There IS Habibi Hon AND MD Meetup where you can look up information.
Feedback appreciated. (but not soo much the "why didn’t you put in my event?" feedback... sigh, no one is omnicient, though I try.)

Tuesday night classes begin Tuesday, September 5 (right after Labor Day). Please note the change in start date! (I moved it up so that we could all go see the Belly Dance Superstars show in Annapolis, which fell on a Tuesday night. Right after I had 500 flyers printed, they changed the date of their show!! It was just too complicated to change back.) Tuesday night classes are choreography based. You’ll be learning proper dance technique and mastering a series of movements that interpret the music we’re working with. There will be emphasis on expression and transitions, to make your dance a complete work of art! On the final night of the session, there is a class party (7-9 PM). 7. Suha Azar in DC!
Master Lebanese Oriental Dance Instructor returns to the DC area to teach two brand new workshops on tabla technique and Lebanese Oriental.
Suha Azar is a Lebanese Oriental Dance instructor from Beirut, Lebanon. Her depth of knowledge is contributed to being born in a family of folkloric dancers and artists. Suha’s dance lineage harks back to an older style from Lebanon. This predates what the oriental dance community within and outside Lebanon believes is the original Lebanese Oriental style. There has been a “disconnect” between the older Lebanese style and the current, modern, interpretation, which can be attributed to the influences of Nadia Jamal and the Lebanese civil war. After the civil war, the Lebanese Oriental dance scene started up again and dancers looked to Nadia Jamal for inspiration because the older style was almost lost. Fortunately, Suha Azar is one of the last remaining experts in the original Lebanese style and hopes to show the world what Lebanese style is really about. To learn more about Suha, check out her website at www.suhaazar.com.
Suha will be continuing on previous themes that she taught at her first workshop series in the DC area. However, she will be giving more emphasis on technique and combinations. This September, Suha will be focusing on Lebanese style tabla technique as well as Lebanese Oriental. These workshops will be spread out over two weekends for flexibility. 9.
Trillian will begin teaching at the Megan Rich Physical Therapy
studio (see www.meganrichpt.com/) in Timonium, on Deerco
Rd. just south of Padonia Rd. Trillian is a student of the Piper
Method of American Belly Dance (www.pipermethod.com/), and
has studied and performed with Piper and others for several
years. She has over 10 years' experience in modern dance, jazz,
and ballet, and an extensive background in anatomy and
physiology. Her teaching style combines the step-wise approach of
the Piper Method, including an emphasis on precision movements,
strong posture, and safe dancing, with the structured exercises
of classical dance, emphasizing fluidity and flexibility.
Beginner classes are on Tuesday nights, beginning Sept 12:
7:00 - 7:30 pm - Mommy and Me Belly Dance
This class is intended for children ages 3-7, with parental
participation. The class will combine the teaching principles of
the Piper Method with elements from early childhood music and
dance education. Students will learn about different Middle
Eastern rhythms, and how different body movements reflect sounds
within the music. We will also begin to learn the fundamentals of
belly dance, such as learning to isolate motions in different
body parts, developing smooth and lyrical arm movements,
traveling across the floor in time to music, and practicing
simple step combinations.
7:30 - 8:30 - Introduction to Belly Dance
This class is open to all skill levels, and is appropriate for
students from ages 8-80 - or beyond! The class will cover skill
elements from Levels 1 and 2 of the Piper Method, and will focus
on translating natural motions of the body into the stylized
movements of belly dance. Students will learn to interpret music,
put together simple combinations, and learn more complex
choreographies. We will work towards a goal of a class
performance in the winter, for those who are interested.
Classes are $15 drop in (this includes both parent and child for
the Mommy and Me class), or $50 for a month of classes. If you
pay by the month, you may make up a missed class by taking
another class at the facility - see their website for a full
schedule.

15. INTRO TO IMPROV TRIBAL BELLY DANCE at The Promenade Dance Sport
Facility
www.mddancesport. com/
Sunday April 8 - May 27th, 1-2pm
The class will be geared towards people who have had at least one
session
of belly dance in the past (experience with basic moves like shimmies,
body rolls, snake arms, etc.), though I can also offer "prep sessions"
at
my house for those interested who need to learn the basics.
Improv Tribal Belly Dance is a series of moves that are woven together
through hand and verbal cues. In this sense, it becomes a universal
dance
form wherein anyone who learns the moves and their cues can dance
together
in an improvisational lead and follow fashion. It's a very liberating,
proud and joyful dance form that celebrates women in all of their
shapes,
sizes, colors and emphasizes spontaneity, interaction and a fusion of
both
individual and group dynamics.
The class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other
fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance,
including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek.
Class size will be limited to 15 students to ensure personal attention.
Students are encouraged to sign up for the 8 week session in advance to
ensure a space in the class.
Class Rate:
$12/drop-in rate or $80/8 week session in advance.
If you have any questions at all about the class structure or need any
more information, or want to pre-register via Paypal, feel free to
message me at brooke@kallistitrib al.com

And on the semicircular front, I have talked a supplier into carrying white silk veils hemmed in silk thread so all I have to do is dye them. Yay! They are really nice, 108” x 45”, semicircular, 8mm. www.NinaAmaya.com - the 5mm rectangles aren’t on there yet, but let me know if you want them.
